It’s been 30 years since Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge first hit the big screen, and yet, the love for Raj and Simran feels as fresh as ever.
To mark the iconic milestone, Kajol who starred in the film opposite Shah Rukh Khan took to Instagram with a heartfelt tribute that sent fans into a full-blown nostalgia spiral.
Sharing the original poster of the film, where she and Shah Rukh appear in their now-iconic poses, Kajol reflected on the film’s enduring legacy. “DDLJ completes 30 years today in time but the way it has spread around the world and through everybody’s hearts and minds simply cannot be counted,” she wrote. “Thank u all for loving it in this phenomenal way!” she added, tagging @iamsrk, @adityachopra and @yrf, along with the hashtags #30YearsOfDDLJ and #LandmarkFilm.
In a second slide, Kajol’s playful side came through with a photo from Interlaken, Switzerland—one of the film’s most famous shooting locations.
The photo featured a quirky banner that read, “Shah Rukh ne kaha Kajol ke kaan mein, chal burger aur sharbat khate hain Sharma ji ki dukaan mein (Shah Rukh whispered into Kajol’s ear, ‘Let’s go have burgers and sherbet at Sharma ji’s shop.’”)
Fans, of course, didn’t hold back. The comments section quickly filled with love, memories, and emotional messages from across the world. “30 years and still feels like yesterday!” wrote one fan, while another simply declared, “Raj and Simran forever!”
Directed by Aditya Chopra and produced by Yash Raj Films, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge first released on 20 October 1995. What started as a heartfelt love story between two young NRIs turned into a cultural phenomenon, one that redefined Bollywood romance for generations.
The movie gave us moments that are now part of history, from the mustard fields of Punjab to that iconic train scene.
As the longest-running movie in Indian cinema history, DDLJ is still showing at Mumbai's Maratha Mandir theatre.
Speaking to Hindustan Times, Kajol reflected on the journey: “We never thought hum ye legacy banake chodenge when we made this film. We just thought we were making a good film, and I am humbled by the fact that so many people and fans have made it so much bigger. They continue to make it bigger than anything will ever be, almost in the sense that they’ve made it a tradition.”
