Assam Govt to distribute Zubeen Garg’s ashes via online portal, memorial planned at Kamarkuchi and Jorhat

The Assam government has announced that the ashes of legendary singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg will be distributed through a dedicated online portal, making it easier for organisations and individuals to request and obtain them. This move reflects the deep emotional connection people across the state and beyond share with the late artist, who passed away on September 19.

According to Education and Cultural Affairs Minister Ranoj Pegu, the online system will streamline applications, allowing institutions and cultural bodies to formally seek portions of Garg’s ashes. The department also confirmed that if remains are available after institutional allocation, individual applicants will be considered as well. “The Cultural Department will look after the process to ensure transparency and accessibility,” Pegu said.

Alongside the ashes distribution plan, memorials for Zubeen Garg will be established at two significant sites in Assam. The first is at Kamarkuchi, where the singer was cremated. The government is enhancing security there, with immediate steps including temporary barricades and the construction of a permanent boundary wall around the cremation ground. Officials confirmed that work on the boundary wall began on Tuesday night to safeguard the pyre site.

The second memorial will be built in Jorhat, the town where Garg spent his formative years. A portion of his ashes will be taken there for the 13th-day rituals, in accordance with traditional customs. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the arrangements were made at the request of Garg’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, and family. He added that the state will also expedite the construction of the Jorhat memorial to give fans and admirers a lasting place of remembrance.

The government emphasized that its intention is not just to honour Garg’s memory but also to ensure the memorials remain accessible to the public. By combining physical spaces of homage with a systematic online allocation of ashes, authorities aim to balance tradition, transparency, and the overwhelming demand from fans.

Zubeen Garg’s passing has left Assam and the country in mourning, with tributes pouring in from across the music and film industries. His contributions to Assamese culture and Indian music at large have made him a household name, and the state’s decision to create lasting memorials ensures his legacy will endure for generations.
