Manoj Tiwari, two-time sitting MP from North East Delhi, will once again contest from the same seat for the third time in a row on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket. A former president of BJP's Delhi unit, Tiwari has cemented his presence in the region, marked by back-to-back wins in the last two general elections.
Here's all you need to know about the BJP candidate from North East Delhi
1. Tiwari, a well-known Purvanchali face of the BJP in Delhi, dons many hats -- he is a politician, actor, and singer.
2. The Bhojpuri singer-actor made his political debut in 2009, contesting the Lok Sabha Elections as a Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate from Gorakhpur against present Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. He, however, lost to Yogi Adityanath.
3. In 2014, he joined the saffron party and contested the Lok Sabha election from the North East Delhi constituency. He defeated Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Anand Kumar.
4. Later, in 2019, Tiwari was re-elected again after defeating former Delhi Chief Minister and Congress candidate Sheila Dikshit by a huge margin.
5. A father of three daughters, Tiwari took his Master's degree in physical education from Banaras Hindu University.
Tiwari is the only sitting parliamentarian out of seven BJP MPs in the national capital to have been awarded a ticket to contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. The party is banking on his massive popularity among the voters as the North East constituency has a significant Purvanchali population. The term Purvanchali is used to refer to migrants from Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh.
The BJP currently holds all seven Delhi Lok Sabha seats and hopes to repeat the last two general elections' scenario.
