Half of the global population was expected to vote as 70 elections across 40 countries were scheduled for 2024. A Moneycontrol analysis shows that, barring a few major economies like India, most have seen a change in leadership in the polls conducted until November 6.

The latest toss-up coming from the US, where former president Donald Trump won a second term in office, defeating the Democratic Party candidate and current vice-president Kamala Harris, in what many perceived would be a nail-biting contest.

While India re-elected Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the prime minister for a third straight term in May, and Pakistan saw incumbent Shehbaz Sharif winning the mandate, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Bhutan witnessed a change in leadership this year.

Power also changed hands in the United Kingdom, where the Labour Party won an election after a hiatus of nearly 14 years. Japan also witnessed a toss-up with a new prime minister elected to office.

In Taiwan and Indonesia, term limits ensured that a new premier was chosen for the office.

In the last 10 years in power, PM Modi has seen three US presidents, six British premiers, two Bangladeshi prime ministers, four Pakistani prime ministers, four Japanese prime ministers, two French Presidents, and two German chancellors.
