Lok Sabha Polls 2024: Telangana sends 17 parliamentarians to the Lok Sabha.

Telangana, which is currently being governed by the Indian National Congress has a total of 17 Lok Sabha seats, of which three are reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates and two for Scheduled Tribes.

After clinching 64 seats in the 119-seat assembly, Congress formed the government in the state in December 2023, ending 10-year-old rule of the Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) in the southern state.

In the run up to 2024 general elections, the Congress, BJP and BRS have already started an aggressive campaign. The victory in the state assembly polls has boosted the confidence of the Congress, which is sure of increasing its tally in Telangana manifold.

During the 2019 elections, BRS had emerged as the largest party, winning nine seats, while the BJP came second with four seats, pushing the INC to third place with three seats. The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen had also secured one seat.

As per Election Commission of India, BRS had managed to secure a vote-share of 41.7 percent, while the BJP managed to get 19.7 percent vote-share and Congress received 29.8 percent. AIMIM’S vote-share was 2.8 percent in the state during the Lok Sabha polls.

Meanwhile, the upcoming Lok Sabha elections are again expected to witness another three-way tussle, with the three major fronts of BRS, NDA, and the INDIA alliance vying for dominance in the state’s political landscape.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, Telangana was one of the opening states for the election, and with little change in the state’s landscape over the last five years, that may be the case once again during the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, expected to take place in April.

Congress leader Revanth Reddy has been credited with revitalising the party and leading it to victory in a state where the Bharat Rashtra Samithi, led by K Chandrashekar Rao, had seemed to enjoy immense popular support and was perceived as very hard to beat.

The BRS had ruled the state ever since its formation in 2014. State’s key Lok Sabha segments include Adilabad, Bhuvanagiri, Chevella, Hyderabad, Karimnagar, Khammam, Mahabubabad, Mahabubnagar.

In 2014 Lok Sabha polls, BRS then known as TRS had secured 11 seats, Congress won two seats and BJP had bagged only one seat in the state. TRS’s vote share was 34.9 percent, Congress’ 24.7, while BJP’s vote-share was 10.5 percent.
