The 2024 Lok Sabha elections began on April 19 and will end on June 1. The first phase of voting is over and the nation is now gearing up for the second phase of voting which will take place on April 26.

To cast a vote in India, producing the Voter ID, also known as the Voter Card or the Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC), is mandatory.

Why is the voter card important?

The voter card plays an important role in verifying the eligibility of the voters. A voter's identity is verified by the unique identification number on the card, which is printed along with their name, address, and photograph.

The card also fulfils the important function of discouraging voter fraud. Authorities can verify details provided on a voter card to make sure that no one has cast more than one vote under a different identity.
