The Hajipur Lok Sabha constituency in Bihar, adjacent to Patna, is one of the state's 40 parliamentary seats and comprises six Assembly segments, including Hajipur, Lalganj, Mahua, Raja Pakar, Raghopur, and Mahnar. This constituency is reserved for Scheduled Castes (SCs).

Hajipur has been the political bastion of the late Ram Vilas Paswan, who hails from this region. Paswan's electoral prowess was evident from his remarkable record of victory here, having been elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) from Hajipur an impressive eight times.

In the upcoming elections, Ram Vilas Paswan’s son, Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) leader Chirag Paswan, and Rashtriya Janata Dal's (RJD) Shiv Chandra Ram will face each other stiff competition.

Chirag's strategic decision to shift his constituency from Jamui to Hajipur, which has been a stronghold for the LJP, is aimed at asserting his position as the political heir to his father, the late Ram Vilas Paswan. The move also underscores his leadership within the Paswan Dalit community, which holds a significant vote share of six percent in the state.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, LJP candidate and Chirag Paswan’s uncle Pashupati Kumar Paras emerged victorious, securing the seat for the first time, defeating RJD’s Shiv Chandra Ram.

In the preceding 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, LJP leader Ram Vilas Paswan clinched victory for the eighth time, polling 4,55,652 votes with a vote share of 50.31%. His closest competitor was Congress candidate Sanjeev Prasad Toni.

Notably, former Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan represented the Hajipur constituency eight times between 1977 and 2014.

Hajipur goes to polls on May 20 in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections, while counting is due on June 4 along with the rest of the country.
