Kolkata Schools Closed Today: Schools in Kolkata will remain closed today, 23 September 2025, after heavy overnight rainfall disrupted normal life across the city. The decision was taken early this morning by local authorities as a precautionary measure, with student safety being the main concern.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that a low pressure system over the northeast Bay of Bengal led to widespread rainfall across several districts in south Bengal. Southern and eastern parts of Kolkata were among the worst affected, with several areas recording high rainfall figures.
According to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), Garia Kamdahari received 332 mm of rain, followed by Jodhpur Park with 285 mm, Kalighat with 280 mm, Topsia with 275 mm, and Ballygunge with 264 mm. In north Kolkata, Thantania recorded 195 mm of rainfall.
IMD officials have warned of further rainfall in the coming days. Another low pressure system is expected to develop over the east central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal by 25 September. It is likely to move west northwest and intensify into a depression, reaching the South Odisha North Andhra Pradesh coasts around 27 September.
Districts including Purba and Paschim Medinipur, South 24 Parganas, Jhargram, and Bankura have been placed on alert due to forecasts of heavy to very heavy rainfall continuing through mid week.
The city administration is preparing for more rain and has urged residents to remain cautious. School authorities have been asked to monitor the situation and await further instructions from the government.
