German consumer prices rose by 0.2% month-over-month in January 2024, following a 0.1% gain in December, as restaurant services became 2.2% more expensive, partly due to the end of the temporary VAT reduction for food. Overall, food prices rose by 0.8%, driven by a sharp increase in the cost of fresh vegetables (+5.8%). Overall energy prices rose slightly more significantly by 1.2%, due to price increases for natural gas (+2.3%) and fuels (+1.0%), among others. Meanwhile, prices for package holidays (-15.8%), clothing (-5.9%), and shoes (-3.5%) fell significantly due to seasonal factors.
