A 13.79-kilometer-long ropeway is under construction in Shimla, which is poised to be Asia’s longest ropeway. The project aims to boost tourism and ease traffic congestion in the hill station.
The Tara Devi-Shimla Ropeway Project is being developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model with the Himachal Pradesh government at a cost of Rs 1,734.40 crore. Executed by the Ropeway and Rapid Transport System Development Corporation, it will also be the world’s second-largest ropeway. The world’s longest ropeway, spanning about 32 kilometers, is located in Bolivia.
Connecting Maa Tara Devi and Sanjauli, the ropeway will cover about 60 kilometers and link 15 key stations across Shimla and nearby areas. It will have the capacity to transport around 2,000 people per hour in both directions.
The system will feature 660 cabins, each capable of carrying 8-10 passengers, with cabins arriving at stations every two to three minutes.
The key boarding stations will include:
-Maa Tara Devi
-Court Complex (Chakkar)
-Tutikandi Parking Area
-ISBT
-Tunnel No. 103
-Railway Station
-Victory Tunnel
-Old Bus Stand
-Boarding Area Near the Lift
-Lakkar Bazaar
-IGMC Hospital
-Navbahar
-Secretariat
-Sanjauli
To promote sustainability, 90 charging stations will be installed at boarding points, and eco-friendly solar panels will be integrated into the cabins.
The project’s funding will be primarily sourced from the New Development Bank, covering 80% of the cost, while the remaining amount will be borne by the government. The bank has approved advance tenders, and initial processes have been completed.
Once operational, the ropeway will provide a seamless and scenic travel experience while significantly reducing traffic congestion. It is expected to revolutionize Shimla’s transport system with a modern, eco-friendly alternative that enhances connectivity, improves air quality, and promotes tourism.
