Kolkata rains: Metro, train & flight ops hit – Check roads to avoid due to waterlogging

The Kolkata traffic police also issued a statement, advising people to avoid driving or drive slowly on certain roads due to waterlogging across the city.

Heavy rain has caused significant waterlogging in Kolkata, leading to severe traffic jams and prompting the city's traffic police to issue a list of roads to avoid. The waterlogging has also disrupted Metro and suburban rail services, with some areas experiencing flooded homes and others declaring school holidays. Due to the heavy rains, Kolkata’s airport operations were significantly impacted.

The Kolkata traffic police also issued a statement, advising people to avoid driving or drive slowly on certain roads due to waterlogging.

  • Amherst Street
  • Kakurgachi underpass
  • Amir Ali Avenue
  • Hospital Road

  • ATM Road
  • Alipore Road

 

Metro and train services suspended
Metro services between Shahid Khudiram and Maidan were temporarily suspended due to tracks being submerged. While metro services are continuing on the rest of the Blue Line.
A spokesperson for Metro Railway Kolkata was quoted by The Times Now as saying that the decision to halt operations between Shahid Khudiram and Maidan stations was taken in the interest of public safety, stressing that ensuring secure travel remains the top priority.

"Truncated services are being run between Dakshineswar and Maidan stations," he said, according to PTI. Moreover, Eastern Railway also restricted train services in the Sealdah and Howrah sections as a precautionary measure.

Flights delayed, airlines issue travel advisory

IndiGo and SpiceJet have issued travel advisories for passengers, citing "temporary blocks and diversions" due to heavy rainfall.

In its advisory, IndiGo stated, "Some routes across Kolkata have been impacted by heavy rain, leading to temporary blocks or diversions." It further advised passengers to plan their journey and have extra time on hand.

Meanwhile, SpiceJet also issued an advisory, stating that the bad weather conditions might affect all departures/arrivals and the consequential flights. The airline further urged people to confirm their flight status before heading to the airport.
