The vehicle owners must have an active FASTag linked to the vehicle registration number to purchase the annual toll pass.

The government has introduced a FASTag-based annual toll pass for private vehicles, effective today. The facility is available for cars, jeeps and vans at toll plazas operated by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).

Price and validity

The annual pass costs Rs 3,000. It is valid for one year from the date of activation or for 200 toll trips, whichever comes first. Once the limit is reached, the FASTag automatically reverts to the standard pay-per-trip mode.

Eligibility and coverage

Only non-commercial private vehicles are eligible. The pass applies to cars, jeeps and vans registered for personal use. Commercial vehicles such as taxis, buses and trucks are excluded. It is valid on national highways and expressways managed by NHAI and MoRTH. State highway toll plazas are not covered unless they are integrated into the central FASTag system.

Activation process

To purchase the pass, vehicle owners must have an active FASTag linked to the vehicle registration number, fixed on the windscreen, and not blacklisted. Tags linked only to a chassis number must be updated. The pass can be bought through the Rajmarg Yatra mobile application, the NHAI or MoRTH websites, or authorised FASTag issuer portals. Payment of Rs 3,000 can be made via UPI, debit or credit card, or net banking. FASTag wallet balances cannot be used. Activation is usually completed within two hours and confirmed by SMS.

Trip calculation and expiry rules

For point-based toll plazas, each one-way crossing counts as a trip and a return counts as two. In closed or ticketed systems, a complete entry-to-exit journey counts as one trip. The pass expires after 200 trips or one year from activation, whichever is earlier. A new pass can be purchased after expiry.

Cost implications

The average toll for a passenger vehicle is about Rs 50. Completing 200 trips in a year without the pass would cost around Rs 10,000. With the annual pass, the cost is fixed at Rs 3,000, giving a saving of about Rs 7,000 for frequent highway travellers.

Purpose and expected impact

The annual pass aims to provide cost relief for regular commuters and reduce payment delays at toll plazas. By fixing toll expenditure for a defined period or number of trips, the scheme is expected to benefit frequent travellers and improve traffic flow on national highways.
