Nifty volatile; ITC, Bharti, L&T, Hindalco, TCS down

At 12.33 hrs IST, the Nifty witnessed sharp profit booking from its intraday high of 4930. It consolidated around 4910-4920 level and then sharp sell off in the last 20-30 minutes took the Nifty in the red; it was up close to 1% prior to sell-off. ITC was down nearly 2%. Heavy selling was seen in FMCG, capital goods and telecom stocks. Buying was seen in realty, pharma and metal stocks.

The Sensex was up 21.43 points or 0.13% at 16311.25, and the Nifty was up 2.75 points or 0.06% at 4855.85. About 1392 shares advanced, 1498 shares declined, and 240 shares were unchanged.

In the largecap space, HCL Tech was the top gainer on the Nifty. SAIL, Siemens, Axis Bank and Ranbaxy Labs were up 2-3.5%. On the losing side, Idea Cellular, Hindalco, BPCL, Larsen and Bharti Airtel were down 2-3.5%.

Index heavyweight Reliance was trading at Rs 1,035.25 up 0.92% from its previous close of Rs 1,025.85. Tech major Infosys was trading at Rs 2,512.40 up 0.56% from its previous close of Rs 2,498.40. Cigarette major ITC was trading at Rs 251.80 down 1.58% from its previous close of Rs 255.85

Top gainers on the BSE Midcap: STC India, Max India, JM Financial, Torrent Pharma and BOC India were up 4-9%.

Top losers on the BSE Midcap: IOB, KGN Industries, Infotech Enter, Shriram City and Praj Industries were down 4-5%.

Top gainers on the BSE Smallcap: Spectacle Inds, FDC, Geodesic, Fem Care Pharma and Lancor Holdings were up 6-8%.

Top losers on the BSE Smallcap: Atul, Cranes Software, Sahara One, Sandur Manganese and Himatsingka Seide were down 5-9%.
