US Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged Russia to halt the “killing” in Ukraine during a call with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, reiterating President Donald Trump’s demand for Moscow to take meaningful steps toward ending the conflict.
Rubio “reiterated President (Donald) Trump’s call for the killing to stop and the need for Moscow to take meaningful steps toward a durable resolution of the Russia-Ukraine war," State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said.
The call followed an extraordinary shift in Trump’s stance on Ukraine, as he suggested on Tuesday that Kyiv could win back all territory lost to Moscow. “After getting to know and fully understand the Ukraine/Russia Military and Economic situation and, after seeing the Economic trouble it is causing Russia, I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
US Vice President JD Vance noted on September 24 that Trump was “growing incredibly impatient” with Moscow, as diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict stalled. “Mr Trump doesn’t feel like they’re putting enough on the table to end the war... If the Russians refuse to negotiate in good faith, I think it’s going to be very, very bad for their country,” Vance said in North Carolina.
Trump also pledged continued support to NATO, stating the alliance could “do what they want with” the weapons supplied, following recent Russian incursions.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told the UN General Assembly that a ceasefire is impossible as “Russia refuses," accusing Moscow of abducting thousands of children, targeting civilian infrastructure, and spreading instability across Europe.
