The law aims to prevent transgender athletes from competing on women's and girls' teams. The signing ceremony was attended by numerous lawmakers, female athletes, and advocates, including former collegiate swimmer Riley Gaines, who has been a vocal proponent of banning transgender athletes from women's sports.
The legislation initially sought to restrict transgender students from using bathrooms and locker rooms aligning with their gender identity. However, this provision was removed due to opposition from a Republican senator. Despite this, one of the bill's original sponsors has vowed to revive the bathroom and locker room ban next year.
Supporters of the ban argue it is necessary to protect women and girls and ensure fair competition in sports. Opponents, including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Nebraska, criticize the measure as a discriminatory solution to a non-existent problem, noting that fewer than 10 transgender students have participated in middle school and high school sports in Nebraska over the past decade.
The ACLU of Nebraska denounced the measure, stating it "slams the door shut" for some transgender students to fully participate in their school communities.
