After Israel and Hamas inked an agreement marking the initial phase of President Donald Trump’s peace initiative to end the two-year Gaza war, former U.S. President Barack Obama took to X (formerly Twitter) to express hope for lasting peace in the region.
“After two years of unimaginable loss and suffering for Israeli families and the people of Gaza, we should all be encouraged and relieved that an end to the conflict is within sight; that those hostages still being held will be reunited with their families; and that vital aid can start reaching those inside Gaza whose lives have been shattered,” Obama wrote.
He added, “More than that, though, it now falls on Israelis and Palestinians, with the support of the U.S. and the entire world community, to begin the hard task of rebuilding Gaza -- and to commit to a process that, by recognizing the common humanity and basic rights of both peoples, can achieve a lasting peace.”
But Donald Trump Jr., the president’s eldest son, quickly fired back at Obama’s post with a pointed response. Quoting Obama’s message, he wrote, “I’ll finish it for you. ‘Thank you, Donald Trump’.” His remark suggested that his father deserved the credit for bringing about the peace deal.
The agreement is being hailed as a breakthrough in the conflict that has devastated Gaza and strained relations across the Middle East. However, several key steps in Trump’s proposed 20-point peace roadmap are still pending. These include determining how Gaza will be governed once fighting stops and resolving the question of Hamas’s disarmament -- a point the group has resisted so far.
Speaking from the Oval Office on Thursday, President Trump said he intends to be in Israel during the release of hostages scheduled under the terms of the deal. “The hostages will be coming back Monday or Tuesday,” he stated. “I hope to be there.” He also hinted that he might address Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, during his visit.
As diplomatic efforts continue, attention now turns to the practical implementation of the ceasefire and the reconstruction of the war-torn Gaza Strip.
