Inside Japan's Cat Island – Where Cats Outnumber Humans

Tucked away in the calm waters off Ehime Prefecture in Western Japan, there exists a tiny, surreal island where cats rule the land and humans are simply guests. Welcome to Aoshima, fondly nicknamed “Cat Island”, where more than 80 free-roaming felines outnumber the island’s mere four human residents.

Yes, you read that right. In this quiet fishing village turned feline paradise, whiskers dominate the landscape, and it’s perhaps the only place in the world where being human makes you the minority.

Once a bustling fishing hub, Aoshima’s population has dramatically declined over the years, a trend seen in many rural parts of Japan. But the cats? They stayed. Originally brought to control the island’s rodent population, the cats found an abundance of food and little interference. Over time, their numbers grew, turning the island into a living, purring postcard of harmony between humans and animals.

There are no hotels, no restaurants, no souvenir shops and certainly no theme parks. What Aoshima offers is pure serenity, coastal views, and an enchanting overload of cat encounters. These island dwellers are largely friendly, often seen lounging on boats, curling up under cherry trees, or simply lining the harbor to welcome ferry visitors.

Getting there is part of the charm, take a 30-minute ferry from Nagahama Port, near Ozu City, and you will feel like you are stepping into a different world, one where time slows down, and tails flick leisurely in the sea breeze.

However, tourism is gently controlled to protect the island’s fragile ecosystem. There are no tourist facilities, and visitors are encouraged to bring their own food and leave no waste behind. The elderly residents care deeply for the cats and appreciate respectful guests who understand that this is a home, not a zoo.

If you are a cat lover, a photographer, or simply someone seeking a surreal travel experience far from the crowds, Aoshima might just be the ultimate purr-fect getaway.
