The Thar Desert, which extends continuously into Rajasthan and into Gujarat, Haryana and Punjab, is frequently referred to as the Great Indian Desert, but continues to be one of the most curious landscapes in India. The following are the five most intense experiences that would describe the soul of the Thar.
Camel Safaris Across the Dunes
Any visit to the Thar Desert cannot be complete without a camel safari. The most popular base of such journeys is covered by Jaisalmer, which is also known as the Golden City. Such safaris are also characterised by the use of traditional Rajasthani food, cultural shows, and camping in a sky filled with stars, which makes it a perfect desert adventure.
Desert Festival and Folk shows
The Thar has just about as much culture as it has sand. Jaisalmer Desert Festival, which is held in February, displays folk music, dance and colourful clothing that allow us to appreciate the tradition of Rajasthan. Certain events such as turban-tying, camel racing and puppet shows make it an exciting affair. In addition to festivals, evening folk dances in desert camps enable visitors to enjoy kalbeliya dances and haunting melodies of the sarangi.
Historic Forts and Havelis
Littered all over the desert are structures of wonders which tell tales of heroism and commerce. Jaisalmer Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site that is high with yellow sandstone walls that merge into the scenery. The fort has narrow alleys within, fancy-dress havelis and Jain temples, which provide an idea of what life in the desert was like in medieval times. Likewise, the havelis, such as Patwon Ki Haveli and Nathmal Ki Haveli, are the masterpieces of complex carvings and craft and provide a glimpse of the wealth of merchants of the desert.
Animals Desert National Park Wildlife
That Desert is not life-deprived. The Desert National Park, which is found near Jaisalmer, is greater than 3000 square kilometres and conserves special desert ecosystems. It hosts the endangered Great Indian Bustard and also eagles, falcons and other migratory birds. The scrublands are also home to blackbucks, desert foxes, chinkaras and are thus a good wildlife sight to explore. The park brings out the fragility of existence in a dry land.
Villages and Deserts
The most remarkable experience of the Thar is probably the encounter with its people. Such villages as Khuri and Kuldhara (a deserted historical location) give an idea about the hardiness of the inhabitants of the desert. Tourists are able to view the old-fashioned mud huts, enjoy hospitality in Rajasthan, and learn about the cultural beliefs that have flourished over the centuries despite the extreme circumstances. The additional values added to the trip include handicrafts, embroidery, and local cuisine, which make the desert not only a visual experience.
To those travellers who want more than a standard vacation, the Thar will offer them a plunge into the cultural richness of India on a backdrop of dramatic scenery.
