Elden Ring Nightreign announced at Game Awards 2024: Gameplay, supported platforms, storyline, and more

At The Game Awards 2024, FromSoftware revealed Elden Ring: Nightreign, a standalone co-operative spin-off set in the Lands Between. The game introduces a new story and gameplay mechanics tailored for multiplayer while maintaining ties to the world of the original Elden Ring.

Elden Ring: Nightreign explores a darkened version of the Lands Between, where players assume the roles of “Nightfarers.” Tasked with surviving a relentless night engulfing the land, they must navigate challenges while facing both familiar enemies and new threats. These include lightning-wielding dragons, multi-headed creatures, and levitating adversaries.

The spin-off emphasises team-based gameplay, supporting up to three players working collaboratively. Combat appears faster-paced than the original, with rebalanced mechanics designed for co-op encounters. Players can expect roguelike elements, with randomized loot and evolving challenges across sessions. A unique battle royale-inspired feature includes a shrinking playable area surrounded by deadly rain.

Each 30-minute gameplay session involves completing objectives over two in-game “days,” culminating in a final boss battle. The gameplay blends influences from Monster Hunter and traditional roguelikes, with players selecting a final boss at the outset of a run.

Nightreign incorporates familiar elements from Elden Ring, including its weapon types, enemy designs, and the starting zone of Limgrave, but reimagines them within a condensed, fast-paced format. Players can now climb cliffs and walls, enhancing mobility across the environment. The game also introduces roguelike progression systems, allowing for unique builds during each run.
