Elon Musk’s xAI to launch AI-powered video games, hires Nvidia experts to build these models

Elon Musk-owned xAI is venturing into video games based on world models, with help from former Nvidia experts. This innovation could revolutionise gaming, robotics, and applications for real-world usage, with the aim of releasing it by 2026.

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence (AI) venture, xAI, will soon expand into video games powered by ‘world models,’ designed to understand and interact with the physical world. These next-generation AI systems could transform gaming beyond traditional text or image-based AI and put the company in direct competition with Meta and Google, both of which are also racing to make AI machines that can learn from the real world.

xAI to create games based on real-world physics: Key details

Unlike traditional AI tools that predict text or images, these advanced AI world models aim to comprehend three-dimensional environments and create life-like gaming environments. Further, these models focus on understanding how objects behave, such as how a ball bounces or how light moves.

To boost this project, xAI has been quietly recruiting top researchers from Nvidia to fast-track its efforts in developing these advanced systems. These include Zeeshan Patel and Ethan He, two former Nvidia researchers with experience in world modelling. Moreover, xAI is now hiring aggressively for its ‘omni team,’ which focuses on AI experiences in images, video, and audio, with openings for a ‘video games tutor’ to train Grok in game design.

Musk has confirmed on X that xAI plans to release an AI-generated game before the end of next year. Salaries for its current available positions range from $180,000 to $440,000 annually. As xAI pushes forward, Musk’s dive into the world of gaming marks his boldest move yet to fuse AI with the physical world realms.
