A Canadian digital creator who has been living in Bengaluru with his family recently shared a video of his young son struggling to navigate around the broken pavements and open drains in the city. The clip, recorded at the popular neighbourhood of Indiranagar, went viral as it highlighted Bengaluru's crumbling infrastructure that both citizens and industry leaders in the city have been complaining about.
Caleb Friesen had lived in Bengaluru for eight years and had briefly lived in Mizoram before returning to the city. So, responding to the video, when an X user asked him to leave the city because he could afford it, the Canadian replied: "Not interested in leaving! This has been my home for 8 years. I do want to see India improve though (especially for my kids) which is why I make videos like this."
Does this qualify as doomwalking? https://t.co/vYoKnigko7pic.twitter.com/A3KtYVzVhD— Caleb (@caleb_friesen) December 20, 2025
The clip begins with Friesen initially holding hands with his son and walking on the footpath. But, the walk soon turns dangerous for the child as parked vehicles, damaged barricades obstruct the path. A few seconds later, Friesen has to carefully manoeuvre his son around cracked and broken pavements with drains flowing underneath them -- a safety hazard that can hurt any inattentive passersby, especially children and senior citizens.
Responding to the video, an X user asked, "Let me guess it’s one of the top-tier neighborhoods in Bangalore?" Friesen replied, "Indiranagar, yep."
Another X user praised him for raising awareness on the poor city infrastructure through his videos. "We have such a long way to go to fix our walking infra. I'm spoiled by the good walking infra in the UK and when I return home in a few weeks, I will be so disappointed. Kudos to you, Caleb... for raising awareness and working towards fixing these paths," the user said.
"You should make a comparison video! Would be interesting to see the difference between average UK footpaths and average Indian footpaths. Or if you send me POV footage I can do a side-by-side comparison video," Friesen offered.
When questioned why he chooses to live in India when many others would leave if they had the option, Friesen said that for him, the country's merits outweigh its flaws.
"India is an amazing country! Lots happening in tech, it's such an exciting story to be part of. Also, my family on my wife's side is here, and personally, I don't really want to live in Canada nor does my wife (neither of us are fans of the direction Canada is taking)," he said. "India has infra problems, of course, but the pros outweigh the cons for me personally + I believe India is rapidly improving (even though it may be hard to see on a day-to-day basis). Compare India 20 years ago and India today, MASSIVE difference."
