After weeks of navigating Bengaluru's notoriously steep rental market, Canadian digital creator Caleb Friesen has finally found a home in Indiranagar—and it’s under budget. In a post on X, Friesen wrote: “Life update: after weeks of searching, I've found a place to live in Indiranagar… fully furnished, and under my budget. Life is good.”

He added that the owners are a "wonderful local family" who only asked for three months' rent as security deposit.

The breakthrough comes after a series of viral posts in which Friesen slammed Bengaluru landlords for demanding exorbitant security deposits. His frustration peaked when he came across a listing for a 4-BHK house in Bennigana Halli that asked for Rs 23 lakh as security deposit—12 months’ rent upfront.

Bengaluru landlords are the greediest in the world,” he wrote. Friesen contrasted this starkly with global rental norms, where deposits in cities like NYC and Toronto are typically one month, Singapore one month per year of lease, San Francisco two months, Dubai 5-10 percent of annual rent, and London 5-6 weeks' rent.

The listing stated that the 4,500-square-foot, fully furnished independent house was located in Bennigana Halli.

A few weeks earlier, Friesen had also shared about a Rs 19.25 lakh deposit for a 3-BHK in Domlur’s Diamond District. “Absolutely bonkers what landlords are expecting these days," the Canadian digital creator had said. "I could literally buy a new Mahindra Thar for less than this deposit." He added he was looking for a home for his family—wife, son, another baby on the way, and a maid.

Originally moving to Bengaluru eight years ago in search of “passive growth,” Friesen recently returned to the city after a brief stay in Mizoram. His latest rental win—a home offered by a “wonderful local family” with just a three-month deposit and no negotiation—marks a rare moment of ease in a city where housing costs continue to frustrate residents.
