Apple is preparing to refresh its MacBook Pro lineup with the introduction of M5 chips, marking the next generation of its in-house silicon. While the update is expected to be minor, it could still be worth considering for anyone planning to buy a new laptop.

The upcoming MacBook Pro models will feature M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max processors. These chips will continue to be built on TSMC’s 3nm process, specifically the N3P node, the same technology used in the A19 series powering the iPhone 17 lineup. Performance gains are expected to be modest compared to previous versions.

Apart from the processor update, the MacBook Pro will not see any major design changes this year. A more significant overhaul is scheduled for late 2026, when Apple is expected to introduce an OLED display, a slimmer chassis, and additional upgrades.

Though not officially confirmed, the M5 MacBook Pro models are also likely to support Wi-Fi 7, a feature that was missing in the current M4 generation but has already appeared in the iPhone 16 and 17 series.

In terms of release timing, Apple usually launches 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro updates in October. However, Bloomberg reports that the company is shifting plans and could launch the M5-powered models in January 2026. Apple has released MacBook Pro updates early in the year before, including in 2023.

Meanwhile, the first product to feature the M5 chip is expected to be the next iPad Pro, which could arrive as early as next month.
