The Centre has asked Netflix to remove the teaser and other promotional content of the upcoming film Ghooskhor Pandat, the BJP claimed on Friday, as the controversy surrounding the project escalated sharply. According to PTI, the directive from the Centre comes amid growing objections over the film’s title and its perceived implications, which have triggered political, legal, and social reactions across multiple states.
Centre has asked Netflix to remove 'Ghooskhor Pandat' film teaser and other promotional contents: BJP.— Press Trust of India (@PTI_News) February 6, 2026
The issue erupted soon after Netflix unveiled promotional material for Ghooskhor Pandat, a crime drama starring Manoj Bajpayee and created by filmmaker Neeraj Pandey. A section of the Brahmin community objected strongly to the title, arguing that the combination of the words “Ghooskhor” (bribe-taker) and “Pandat” unfairly associates corruption with a caste-linked identifier. BJP leaders said the Centre took note of these concerns and subsequently asked the streaming platform to pull down the teaser and related promotional assets.
According to reports, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry has also held discussions with Netflix regarding the film’s title, amid mounting objections and concerns raised over its wording and the potential impact on public sentiment.
As per PTI, the BJP has maintained that the move was necessary to prevent the spread of content that could hurt sentiments and disturb public order. Party representatives also stated that creative freedom cannot override social responsibility, especially when terminology used in titles risks being interpreted as defamatory or derogatory towards a community.
The controversy has not remained limited to political statements. In Uttar Pradesh, police registered an FIR following complaints that the film’s title and promotions were offensive and could lead to unrest. The matter has also reached the judiciary, with petitions filed seeking a stay on the release of the film, arguing that the title amounts to collective defamation.

Responding to the backlash, Neeraj Pandey issued a clarification saying the film is entirely fictional and that “Pandat” is used as a colloquial name for a character, not as a reference to any caste or community. He also said the makers decided to take down promotional content temporarily to allow space for dialogue and to ensure the film is judged in its complete narrative context rather than through brief promotional material.
Netflix has not issued a detailed public statement so far, but the teaser is no longer available on its official platforms. The development places Ghooskhor Pandat at the centre of a larger debate on creative expression, community sensitivities, and the role of streaming platforms in navigating cultural and political fault lines in India.
