Apple is reportedly preparing to begin mass production of its upcoming MacBook Pro models powered by the latest M5 series processors, along with a new Studio Display. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the timeline for release currently falls between the end of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026. If this holds true, customers should be able to place orders for the refreshed laptops by March 2026 at the latest.
While Apple typically refreshes its Mac lineup in October, analysts believe the company could shift the schedule slightly. Both Gurman and supply chain specialist Ming-Chi Kuo have indicated that the MacBook Pro update may not arrive until early 2026. The strategy would not be unprecedented. Apple previously launched MacBook Pro models featuring M2 Pro and M2 Max chips in January 2023, demonstrating that the brand is willing to deviate from its traditional release cycle when necessary.
The next generation MacBook Pro models, expected in both 14-inch and 16-inch sizes, will come equipped with M5, M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. However, early reports suggest that these laptops will not feature major design changes beyond the updated processors. This means buyers may see improvements in raw performance, efficiency, and battery life, but the familiar chassis and display options will likely remain unchanged for this release.
More significant upgrades are expected in late 2026, when Apple is believed to be planning a wider overhaul of the MacBook Pro. The list of enhancements being discussed includes the introduction of OLED displays for deeper blacks and improved contrast ratios, the addition of touchscreen support, a thinner body design, and the inclusion of M6 processors. The M6 chips are expected to be manufactured on TSMC’s cutting-edge 2nm process, promising even greater performance and efficiency gains compared to the upcoming M5 series.
Another area generating interest is connectivity. Rumours suggest Apple is exploring the possibility of adding cellular support to its Mac lineup. If this becomes reality, future MacBook Pro models could feature a custom-designed modem similar to the C1 chip used in the iPhone 16e or the C1X modem integrated in the iPhone Air. The addition of such a feature would allow users to remain connected without relying solely on Wi-Fi networks.
Apple may also make cosmetic refinements to the MacBook Pro with the OLED generation, including reducing the size of the notch around the front camera. This would create a cleaner design and possibly allow for more usable screen space without altering the overall footprint of the device.
Apple’s strategy appears to be split across two phases. The first is centred on delivering performance gains through the M5 series by early 2026. The second phase, scheduled for late 2026, will introduce more noticeable hardware and design changes. For buyers, the choice will come down to whether they prefer to upgrade early for performance or wait for the more substantial revamp.
