Chennai police have taken eight people into custody, including actress Anju Krishna, following a drug bust that led to the seizure of methamphetamine, ganja, cannabis, an LSD stamp, and multiple mobile phones. The arrests were made after a targeted operation by the Anti-Narcotics Intelligence Unit (ANIU) South, based on information gathered during an ongoing probe into drug circulation in the city.
How the Police Tracked the Group
According to officials, the breakthrough came after investigators first detained a man identified as Vigneshwaran, a Chennai resident. During questioning, he allegedly revealed the source of the drugs, leading police to Venkatesh Kumar. Acting on this lead, the ANIU team planned a decoy operation. A police decoy contacted the suspected supplier and fixed a meeting near Valasaravakkam. When the vehicle arrived at the designated location, officers intercepted it, searched those present, and made multiple arrests on the spot.
What Was Seized
During the raid, police recovered six grams of methamphetamine, seven grams of OG ganja, 15 grams of cannabis, one LSD stamp, and nine mobile phones. Officials said the seized items indicate both consumption and possible distribution. All confiscated material was handed over to the Valasaravakkam police station for further legal procedures.
Who All Were Arrested
Those taken into custody include actress Anju Krishna, assistant director Vincy Nivedha, and others identified as Karthik Raja, Yashwant, Sriram, Alvibinsha, and Venkatesh Kumar. Police confirmed that all eight were produced before a magistrate and remanded to judicial custody as the investigation continues.
Assistant Director Also Among the Accused
Police officials stated that Vincy Nivedha, who works as an assistant director in the Tamil film industry, was present with the group at the time of the arrest. Her involvement has drawn attention within film circles, adding to concerns about drug use and circulation within sections of the entertainment industry.
Who Is Anju Krishna?
Anju Krishna may not be a widely known face nationwide, but she has worked in South Indian cinema, including Tamil and Malayalam films. She appeared in the Tamil movie Vellimalai, directed by Om Vijay, and has acted in Malayalam films such as Aaro and Akasham Kadann. In Aaro, directed by Kareem with Joju George in the lead, Anju played a supporting yet noticeable role. Her arrest has surprised audiences familiar with her work, especially given her relatively low-profile presence in the industry.
What Happens Next
After being produced in court, all eight accused were sent to judicial custody. Police have stated that further investigation is underway to determine the supply chain, the frequency of transactions, and whether more individuals are linked to the network. Officials are also examining the seized mobile phones for digital evidence that could reveal contacts, payment trails, or wider connections.
As the probe deepens, authorities maintain that the case is part of a broader effort to crack down on narcotics in Chennai. For now, the arrests have reignited conversations around substance abuse and accountability, particularly when public figures are involved.
