Yash Dayal earned a maiden call-up in India's Test squad for the upcoming Bangladesh series, which gets underway from September 19. The BCCI has announced the squad for the first Test, which will be played at Chepauk, and the left-arm Uttar Pradesh seamer joins the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Akash Deep. While Bumrah and Siraj are experienced and will probably occupy the slots for seamers, but if the think tank plans to add a third seam option, either Akash Deep or Yash will fill up the spot.
Chanderpal Dayal, Yash's father, is a retired officer with Accountant General's Office in Allahabad. He was overwhelmed with his son's India selection but in a recent interaction with PTI, Chanderpal recalled the dreadful night, when Yash was smoked for five consecutive sixes during an IPL encounter between Gujarat Titans and Kolkata Knight Riders.
Sharing the ordeal that followed post the hammering, Chanderpal called it as "hadsa", a Hindi word which translates to accident. He also mentioned how school students would hoot "Riinnnkuuuu Siiiinghhhhh, Riiiinnnkuuuuu Siiiinghhhh, five sixes, five sixes" slogans when their buses passed through his locality.
"Humare liye woh ek hadsa tha (It was like an accident for us)," Chanderpal was quoted as saying by the news agency. "The school bus would pass by, and kids would scream, ‘Rinku Singh, Rinku Singh, five sixes.’ It was so painful -- why did this happen to my son?” an emotional Chanderpal said further.
Chanderpal also said how the incident had left his wife and son depressed, and how hard it was for both to come out of it. "His mother Radha was so distraught that she fell ill and refused to eat as Yash went into a shell. Titans also released him as he had to rebuild his career," said Chanderpal.
"Yash fell ill, but we never let him think about giving up. We, as a family, made a pledge. Jab tak tum (Yash) India nahin kheloge, chodenge nahin. India tum khelke rahoge (We won't stop until you play for India. You will play for India)."
"Me and my family would keep motivating him to ensure that he never thinks of giving up. And today, he's in front of you."
Yash's father also used one of cricket's most iconic moment, involving Yuvraj Singh and Stuart Broad, to lift his son's mood. Chanderpal cited the legendary of England pacer Broad, who despite being dispatched for six sixes in the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup went to finish his career with 600 Test scalps. "We explained to him that very night that it wasn’t the first time something like this had happened, and it won’t be the last. Yuvraj Singh hit Stuart Broad for six sixes, and Broad went on to become one of the greatest seam bowlers of all time."
