In Wednesday’s second India U-19 vs. Australia U-19 one-dayer at the Ian Healy Oval in Brisbane, 14-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi etched his name into the record books by breaking the record for the most career sixes in Youth ODI cricket.
The fearless left-hander hammered his 39th maximum, surpassing the long-standing mark of 38 sixes set by former India U-19 skipper Unmukt Chand. While Chand needed 21 matches to reach his tally, Suryavanshi required just 10 innings to storm past it—an extraordinary display of power-hitting at such a young age.
Suryavanshi showcased his trademark aggression against Australia, smashing six towering sixes in a 70-run blitz before falling to skipper Yash Deshmukh, who was brilliantly assisted by Aryan Sharma’s stunning catch in the deep.
Suryavanshi has piled up 540 runs in Youth ODIs, with more than a quarter (26%) coming via boundaries. He now boasts 41 sixes to his name. Among Indians, only Unmukt Chand trails him, while Yashasvi Jaiswal — who went on to cement his place in the senior Indian side — ranks next with 30 sixes in 27 Youth ODIs between 2018 and 2020.
Suryavanshi, who is only 14 years old, has already broken a number of records. He was the youngest player to play in the Indian Premier League, where he also became the league's youngest centurion and scored the second-fastest century in its history.
Suryavanshi, who is from Samastipur, has already made history with his remarkable accomplishments. He became the youngest player in the history of the Ranji Trophy when he made his debut against Mumbai in the 2023–24 season at the age of just 12 years and 284 days.
Additionally, he broke the world record formerly held by Kamran Ghulam of Pakistan, who got a century off 53 balls in 2019, by smashing the fastest Youth ODI century off just 52 balls. He broke the Indian record for the most sixes in a single match (10), which was set in the same innings.
At just 13 years and 188 days, he etched his name in history as the youngest centurion in 170 years of competitive cricket. He also smashed the record for the fastest youth-level century by an Indian, hammering a 58-ball hundred against Australia in the first Youth Test in Chennai. That blistering knock is the second-fastest at this level, bettered only by England’s Moeen Ali, who got there in 56 balls.
