Mumbai Indians called star batter Tilak Varma back in the pavilion when the side needed 24 off seven deliveries to win. MI brought in Mitchell Santner in place of Varma and Suryakumar Yadav was visibly baffled by the decision. During the penultimate over of Mumbai Indians' run chase against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Tilak Varma was retired out after struggling to accelerate, having scored 25 off 23 balls.
As Varma made his way back to the dugout, Suryakumar Yadav was visibly emotional and didn’t hold back his reaction. MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene approached Suryakumar to have a word, but the Indian T20I captain appeared unconvinced by the decision even after their conversation. A video capturing the moment has since gone viral on social media. Watch the video here...

After the loss, MI captain Hardik Pandya did not blame anyone but revealing the thinking behind the decision of retiring Varma out he said ,"It was obvious. We needed some hits. In cricket, some of those days come. When you try but it doesn't come off."

"I waited till the last few overs hoping that because he spent some time there so he should have been able to get that hit out of the way but I just felt that at the end I just needed someone fresh to go and he was struggling," said coach Mahela Jayawardene.
"When these things happen in cricket and not nice to take him out but I had to do that, it was a tactical decision at that point," he added.

Suryakumar Yadav had every reason to feel disheartened. MI remained in the hunt as long as he was at the crease. However, the momentum shifted dramatically when he was dismissed in the 17th over while attempting to scoop Avesh Khan for six. Surya played a brilliant knock, scoring 67 off 43 balls, but his efforts ultimately fell short as Mumbai Indians lost the match by 12 runs. When he walked out to bat, MI were 17 for in the third over the chase.
