Scientists found toxic 'forever chemicals' in sea otters off the Canadian coast. Sea otters found dead due to human-created chemicals pollute marine life. Researchers say this pollution could harm animals and coastal areas.

What Was Found in Sea Otters?

Researchers looked at dead sea otters from coastal British Columbia, Canada. They found high levels of PFAS, also known as forever chemicals. These chemicals do not break down and can stay in bodies for a long time. Livers had much higher amounts than muscles or other tissues. Eight different PFAS were in all the tested animals.

Who Did the Study?

The University of British Columbia team led the research. Scientists carefully tested liver and muscle samples from eleven sea otters. For researchers, it is important to watch and protect the health of marine wildlife. The study came out in Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry by Oxford University Press.

What Are “Forever Chemicals”?

PFAS are human-created chemicals in non-stick coatings and waterproof materials. They're also in firefighting foam and many home products. Once released, PFAS stick around in the environment for many years.

They build up in animals and can badly impact health. Scientists worry about how long they last and how they spread worldwide in ecosystems.

Why This Is Important?

Sea otters eat lots of fish and live close to shore. This makes them likely to get chemicals in their bodies. PFAS can harm organs, affect reproduction and weaken the immune system. They might also get into seafood that people eat, causing health problems. The study shows we urgently need to cut down on chemical pollution around the world.

What Future Research Is Planned?

Scientists plan to study more sea otters and other marine mammals. They aim to track PFAS pollution trends along Canada’s entire coastline. Researchers also want to examine effects of PFAS on animal reproduction. The goal is to guide conservation policies and reduce chemical exposure.
