Scientists have revealed have uncovered a phenomenon on Saturn’s moon, 'Titan'. This research defies conventional chemical rules. What researchers came across was substances that should never mix are doing just that which leads to blurring the lines of chemical compatibility.
What Surprising Bond Exists?
Researchers at Chalmers University and NASA have shown that hydrogen cyanide (HCN), a polar molecule, has the potential to crystallize together with the nonpolar methane and ethane at extreme cold temperatures (~ -180 °C) at Titan. This observation challenges the laws of classical chemistry and demonstrates how molecules can act erratically in alien environments.
Researchers behind this Discovery
This discovery was made at Chalmers University in Sweden, in partnership with NASA. The scientists used laboratory simulations and modern computational models to re-create the icy conditions on Titan to observe these previously unseen molecular connections.
This specific molecular interaction has been surprisingly disclosed in recent analysis. Although Titan has been studied for decades by the Cassini-Huygens. The scientific article 'Hydrogen cyanide and hydrocarbons mix on Titan' has been published in the journal PNAS.
Where Does It Occur?
This phenomenon occurs on the largest Titan, which is a moon of Saturn. The methane lakes, icy dunes and thick nitrogen atmosphere are some of the well-known characteristics of this moon. The harsh conditions of Titan are like a natural laboratory and have simulated part of the chemical conditions believed to have existed early on earth.
Why Does This Matter?
The HCN-methane/ethane interaction could enable formation of complex organic molecules in environments, once considered chemically inert. The observation impacts prebiotic chemistry, revealing that key life-building compounds. The compounds such as amino acids and nucleobases may develop under icy extraterrestrial conditions.
How Could This Impact Life?
These observations transform the understanding of scientists in the modelling of chemical on icy worlds. They also provide guidance on spacecraft to find life, demonstrating that under extreme alien conditions that were previously believed to be inhospitable, organic chemistry can still be performed.
