The story of Gautam Buddha

Buddha Purnima 2024 will be observed on Thursday, May 23, 2024. The day marks the birth anniversary of Gautama Buddha. On this occasion, let's learn more about who is Siddharth Gautam and how did he became Gautam Buddha.

Siddhartha Gautama, more commonly known as the Buddha, wasn't always an enlightened teacher. Born a prince in Lumbini (present-day Nepal) around the 6th or 5th century BCE, he lived a privileged life sheltered from hardship. However, a deep desire for understanding human suffering led him to renounce his royal life and embark on a spiritual quest.

Driven by a burning question 'how to overcome suffering?' Siddhartha embarked on a path of self-discovery. He spent years practicing meditation and asceticism, searching for answers. Finally, at Bodh Gaya in India, he attained enlightenment, a state of liberation known as Nirvana. This experience transformed him into the Buddha, the Enlightened One.

The real story of Siddharth Gautam

Siddhartha, amidst the opulence of the palace, married with a son, enjoyed every luxury as his father's heir until he encountered the Four Signs. Whether he witnessed the old man, the sick man, the dead man, and the ascetic in quick succession during a single carriage ride, or over four days, the narrative describes how he questioned his charioteer, "Am I also subject to this?" The charioteer affirmed that aging, sickness, and death were inevitable for all.

Upon reflection, Siddhartha realized that everything he cherished, including his lavish attire, steeds, and gems, would inevitably be lost to him, as he was not immune to aging, illness, and mortality. The prospect of such loss was intolerable, yet he observed the serene ascetic, equally mortal, and inquired about his contentment. The ascetic explained his commitment to spiritual introspection and renunciation, perceiving the world and its allurements as mere illusions, thus he was indifferent to loss, having relinquished all possessions.

Siddhartha was aware that his father would forbid such a spiritual quest, and his duties to his wife and son would also hinder him. Nevertheless, the idea of enduring a life destined for loss and suffering was insufferable. One night, after contemplating his attachments and observing his wife and son asleep, he exited the palace, abandoned his regal garments, donned an ascetic's robe, and set forth into the forest. Depending on the version, his departure is either aided by supernatural forces or is a solitary venture.

The Teachings of the Buddha

The Buddha dedicated the rest of his life to sharing his newfound wisdom. He emphasized a middle path between indulgence and self-denial, advocating for a life of moderation and ethical conduct. His core teachings, the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path, offered a roadmap to escape suffering.
