Significance of Shitala Satam

Shitala Satam is dedicated to Goddess Shitala Mata, who is believed to shield her devotees from contagious diseases and purify their homes. Families across Gujarat observe this day with rituals passed down through generations, keeping alive the traditional belief that health is the greatest blessing.

Shitala Satam: Unique Ritual

One of the most distinct customs of Shitala Satam is the prohibition of cooking fresh food on the festival day. All meals are prepared a day earlier during Randhan Chhath and consumed cold on Shitala Satam. This practice is symbolic of discipline, devotion, and remembrance of the Goddess’s blessings.

The tradition of not cooking is similar to Basoda and Sheetala Ashtami, celebrated in North Indian states after Holi. While the names differ, the essence remains the same, honoring the Goddess who safeguards health. Shitala Satam is also called Sheetala Satam and Sitala Satam in different regions, but the devotion to Goddess Shitala Mata remains constant.
