Dev Deepawali: Significance

Dev Deepawali holds great spiritual significance as it marks the victory of Lord Shiva over the demon Tripurasura, symbolizing the triumph of divine light over darkness and ignorance. This sacred event is also referred to as Tripurotsav or Tripurari Purnima, highlighting the destruction of the three demon cities by Lord Shiva.

Celebrated fifteen days after Diwali, Dev Deepawali is regarded as the Diwali of the Gods, when celestial beings descend to the holy city of Varanasi to bathe in the sacred waters of the Ganga and witness the grand Deepdan rituals.

On this auspicious day, devotees wake up early to take a holy dip in the River Ganga during the sacred Kartik Purnima Snan. It is believed that bathing in the Ganga on this day purifies the soul and washes away sins.

As evening falls, millions of earthen lamps (Diyas) illuminate the ghats of Varanasi, creating a divine spectacle. From Assi Ghat to Panchganga Ghat, every step glows with rows of flickering lamps, symbolizing the presence of divine light. Temples across Kashi, including Kashi Vishwanath Temple, are beautifully decorated and filled with devotional chants, bhajans, and prayers. Devotees also perform Deepdan in honor of their ancestors and deities, seeking blessings for peace, prosperity, and spiritual upliftment.

Kartik Purnima: Spiritual Importance

Kartik Purnima, the day on which Dev Deepawali is celebrated, is considered one of the most sacred full moon days in the Hindu calendar. Scriptures mention that on this day, Lord Vishnu took the form of Matsya Avatar to save creation from destruction.

It is also believed that by lighting lamps and observing fasts on Kartik Purnima, one earns immense punya (spiritual merit). The festival signifies the completion of the Kartik month, a period known for intense devotion, fasting, and charity.
