Why Hanumath Jayanthi is Celebrated in Margashirsha Amavasya

In Tamil Nadu, Hanumath Jayanthi is traditionally observed during Margashirsha Amavasya. It is believed that Lord Hanuman was born on this Amavasya when Moolam Nakshatram was prevailing. In most years, Margashirsha Amavasya and Moolam Nakshatra occur together, making the day spiritually powerful.

If Moolam Nakshatra does not coincide with Amavasya in a particular year, Amavasya itself is given priority to determine the Hanumath Jayanthi date. Due to this lunar calculation, the festival usually falls in December or January as per the Gregorian calendar.

Hanuman Jayanti in North India

In North Indian states, Hanumath Jayanthi is widely known as Hanuman Jayanti. Here, the festival is celebrated on Chaitra Purnima, the full moon day of the Chaitra month. This observance is among the most popular and widely followed forms of Hanuman Jayanti across the country.

On this day, devotees remember the divine birth of Lord Hanuman, also revered as the Vanara God, and offer prayers seeking courage, wisdom, and protection.

Regional Variations in Hanumath Jayanthi

Hanumath Jayanthi is unique because it is observed at different times of the year based on regional beliefs and calendar systems.

In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated over a 41-day period. The observance begins on Chaitra Purnima, when devotees start a disciplined Deeksha, and concludes on the tenth day of Krishna Paksha in the Vaishakha month, which is marked as the final Hanuman Jayanti Day.

Spiritual Importance of Hanumath Jayanthi

Hanumath Jayanthi is more than a birth anniversary. It is a reminder of Lord Hanuman’s ideals-selfless service, devotion to Lord Rama, inner strength, and humility. Devotees chant Hanuman mantras, read sacred texts, and visit temples to seek blessings for health, courage, and mental strength.

Hanumath Jayanthi 2025 offers devotees a meaningful opportunity to reconnect with age-old traditions while embracing the timeless values taught by Lord Hanuman. It is a day to pause, pray, and draw strength from devotion that has guided generations and still hits different, even today.
