In an extraordinary celestial alignment, Muslims worldwide will observe the crescent moon for Ramadan on the same evening this year. This unique event is possible because countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Indonesia, Malaysia, France, and Germany all welcomed the month of Shaban 1446 AH on the same day as Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, Bahrain, Palestine, Oman, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Turkey, and Egypt. Typically, the moon is first sighted in the Gulf countries, followed by South Asian nations a day later, making this year's synchronization an exceptional occurrence.
Global Crescent Moon Sighting: February 28, 2025
For Ramadan 2025, the Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia, along with moon sighting committees from various countries, has urged Muslims to search for the crescent moon on Friday, February 28, 2025, which corresponds to 29 Sha’ban 1446 AH in the Islamic calendar. If the moon is spotted on this evening, Ramadan will begin the following day, Saturday, March 1, 2025. If the crescent is not visible, the holy month will commence on Sunday, March 2, 2025.
In Saudi Arabia, local media has reported that the Supreme Court has requested residents to report any moon sightings to the nearest court. Traditionally, the Saudi moon sighting committee observes the crescent in the days leading up to the anticipated start of Ramadan, but this year, individual participation through telescopes and the naked eye has been encouraged.
