As the holy month of Ramadan 2025 approaches, millions of Muslims worldwide are preparing for a period of fasting, prayer, and spiritual reflection. However, the exact start date of Ramadan varies depending on moonsighting observations. Since the Islamic calendar follows a lunar cycle, the beginning of Ramadan is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon, leading to regional differences in its commencement.
When is Ramadan 2025 Moonsighting?
The Islamic calendar is based on lunar months, meaning the start of each month depends on the sighting of the new crescent moon. The month preceding Ramadan, Shaban, began on January 31, 2025, in many countries. Traditionally, if the crescent moon is sighted on the 29th day of Shaban, Ramadan will begin the next day. This year, astronomers predict the moon may be visible on February 28, 2025, which would set the first fast (Roza) for March 1, 2025.
However, if the moon is not visible on February 28, Shaban will be extended by one day, pushing the start of Ramadan to March 2, 2025. Some Islamic scholars suggest that due to possible low visibility in certain regions, the exact date may vary based on local observations.

When Will Ramadan 2025 Begin in India?
For South Asian nations like India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, moonsighting committees will observe the sky on March 1, 2025. If the crescent moon is sighted, Ramadan will commence on March 2. Otherwise, the first Roza will fall on March 3, 2025. As a result, Muslims in these countries will await official announcements from local Islamic authorities to confirm the start date.
