On the seventh day of Navratri, devotees celebrate Goddess Kalaratri, the fiercest and most protective form of Goddess Parvati. This day is significant for those seeking strength and protection, as Kalaratri embodies the qualities of fearlessness and bravery.
Goddess Kalaratri is depicted in a striking manner. She has a dark complexion and rides on a donkey, symbolizing her connection to the earth. Her four hands express powerful meanings: the right hands are in Abhaya (protection) and Varada (blessings) mudras, while she wields a sword and an iron hook in her left hands. This imagery reflects both her fierce nature and her protective qualities.
Despite her intimidating appearance, Goddess Kalaratri offers comfort through her Abhaya and Varada Mudras, blessing her devotees with courage and security. Her dual identity as a ferocious warrior and a benevolent protector is why she is also referred to as Goddess Shubhankari (शुभंकरी), the one who brings auspiciousness.
