Thiruvananthapuram: On the sacred occasion of Karkidaka Vavu 2025, thousands of Hindus across Kerala performed the traditional Bali Tharpanam ritual to pay homage to their ancestors. From riverbanks to seashores, devotees of all ages gathered at major temples and holy spots, seeking blessings for their forefathers and praying for their spiritual liberation.

Significance of Karkidaka Vavu and Bali Tharpanam

Karkidaka Vavu holds immense spiritual importance in Kerala. According to Hindu belief, performing Bali Tharpanam on this day helps departed souls attain moksha (liberation). Families offer prayers, water, and sacred offerings to ancestors, ensuring peace and prosperity for generations.

Major Pilgrimage Spots Witness Heavy Rush

Temples and holy places across the state saw a massive turnout of devotees since early morning. The most visited spots included:

  • Aluva Shiva Temple near Kochi
  • Thirunelli Temple in Wayanad
  • Parasurama Temple at Thiruvallam near Thiruvananthapuram
  • Papanasam Beach in Varkala
  • Thirunavaya Navamukunda Temple on the banks of Bharathapuzha in Malappuram

Among these, Thirunavaya Navamukunda Temple witnessed the largest gathering, with devotees lining up at dawn to perform rituals. Temple authorities made extensive arrangements to accommodate the surge of pilgrims, ensuring smooth conduct of the ceremony.

Public Holiday Across Kerala

Marking the spiritual significance of this day, schools and government offices across Kerala remained closed, allowing families to participate in the sacred rituals. Karkidaka Vavu continues to be a day of devotion, remembrance, and cultural unity, drawing thousands every year to honor their ancestors and uphold Kerala’s age-old traditions.
