Nestled in the Mon district of Nagaland, Longwa Village is one of the largest and most intriguing villages in the region. Known for its striking geography and rich cultural heritage, the village is home to a one-of-a-kind structure — the Angh’s house, which literally spans two countries. The kitchen lies in India, while the bedroom sits across the border in Myanmar, making it a must-visit for travelers seeking unusual and photogenic experiences.
Despite straddling two nations, the entire village is ruled by a single chief, maintaining a unique cultural and administrative harmony. Nature lovers will also be drawn to Longwa’s remarkable landscape, where four rivers flow through the village — two in India and two in Myanmar, offering picturesque views and a serene environment.
How to Reach Longwa Village
Reaching Longwa requires a bit of planning, as the village is relatively remote. The nearest airport is Jorhat in Assam, approximately 161 km away by road. However, there is no direct bus service from the airport to Mon. Travelers need to first reach Sonari or Simulguri, and then proceed to Mon.
For those opting for train travel, Bhoju railway station in Assam is the closest. From Bhoju, one must travel about 7 km to Sonari, and from there, continue by bus to Mon. Another option is to reach Simulguri, though direct bus services to Mon are not available. Travelers must first go to Naginimora, which is 20 km from Simulguri, and then take a bus for the remaining 75 km to the Mon district headquarters.
Bus routes to Mon are limited but functional. One can travel via Sonari in Sibsagar district of Assam, covering about 65 km to Mon, or via Simulguri, a slightly longer route of approximately 95 km, with the Naginimora transfer in between.
Why Longwa is a Must-Visit
Longwa Village offers a rare glimpse into a border community that seamlessly blends two nations, natural beauty, and cultural heritage. The Angh’s house, spanning India and Myanmar, is not only an architectural curiosity but also a symbol of the village’s unique history and governance. Coupled with the scenic rivers and the serene landscape, Longwa provides an unforgettable experience for adventurous travelers and cultural explorers alike.
Whether you are a photographer, a travel enthusiast, or someone looking to explore hidden gems in Northeast India, Longwa Village promises a journey unlike any other, where borders blur and nature’s beauty shines.
