Ramadan 2026 in UAE: Official Moon Sighting Declares Start on February 19

The holy month of Ramadan 2026 in the UAE will officially begin on Thursday, February 19, 2026, following the successful sighting of the new crescent moon. Astronomers and official moon-sighting committees across the Emirates confirmed the lunar observation, marking the start of a month dedicated to fasting, prayer, and spiritual reflection for Muslims.

Astronomical Insights and Expected Start

According to the Emirates Astronomy Society, preliminary calculations had already suggested that Ramadan would begin on February 19. The new crescent moon was born on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at 4:01 PM UAE time, but due to its quick setting—just one minute after sunset—it was not visible that evening. This made Thursday, February 19, the first day of fasting, a date later confirmed by the UAE Moon-Sighting Committee.

Fasting Hours in Ramadan 2026

At the beginning of Ramadan in Abu Dhabi, fasting hours are projected to last around 12 hours and 46 minutes. By the end of the month, as daylight hours increase, fasting will extend to approximately 13 hours and 25 minutes. This gradual shift reflects the seasonal transition, with daylight stretching from 11 hours and 32 minutes to 12 hours and 12 minutes.

Weather Conditions During Ramadan

Ramadan in the UAE often coincides with seasonal changes, and 2026 is no exception. Early in the month, temperatures in Abu Dhabi are expected to range between 16°C and 28°C, influenced by lingering northern winds. Toward the end of Ramadan, with spring settling in, temperatures are forecast to rise between 19°C and 32°C. Rainfall is also possible, with average precipitation levels potentially exceeding 15 millimeters, consistent with historical seasonal patterns.

Role of the UAE Moon-Sighting Committee

The UAE Moon-Sighting Committee, chaired by Sheikh Abdullah bin Bayyah, plays a vital role in preserving tradition and ensuring lunar accuracy in the Islamic calendar. Comprised of scholars, jurists, and astronomers, the committee validates crescent sightings not only to confirm Ramadan but also to declare the end of the month with the arrival of Shawwal and the celebration of Eid Al-Fitr.

Spiritual Significance

With the official confirmation of Ramadan’s start, Muslim communities across the UAE are preparing for a month of fasting, charity, and togetherness. From nightly iftar gatherings to acts of generosity, Ramadan 2026 promises a time of spiritual renewal, family bonding, and cultural celebration across the Emirates.
