Kalashtami November 2024 Date

Kalashtami, also known as Kala Ashtami, is a sacred day observed every month on the Ashtami Tithi (eighth day) of Krishna Paksha (waning moon phase). It will be celebrated on Friday, November 22, 2024. Dedicated to Lord Bhairav, a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva, Kalashtami holds immense significance for devotees who fast and worship to seek his blessings.

Kalashtami: Significance
Kalashtami is an important day for devotees of Lord Bhairav, who is known as the protector of dharma and a fierce destroyer of evil. It is believed that Lord Shiva manifested as Bhairav on this day, making it a spiritually powerful occasion. Worshipping Lord Bhairav on Kalashtami is said to grant protection from negativity, spiritual growth, and courage to overcome adversities. The most prominent Kalashtami, known as Kalabhairav Jayanti, falls in the month of Margashirsha as per the North Indian Purnimant calendar, and in the Kartik month according to the South Indian Amavasyant calendar. Despite the differences in regional calendars, both observe Kalabhairav Jayanti on the same day.Fasting Rules for Kalashtami

Devotees observe a fast on Kalashtami to purify their mind and soul. Fasting rules include:

  • Abstaining from grains and salt: Many devotees eat only fruits or consume a simple satvik meal during the day.
  • Meditation and prayers: Devotees focus on chanting mantras dedicated to Lord Bhairav, such as the Bhairav Ashtakam, to seek his blessings.
  • Night vigil: Since Lord Bhairav is closely associated with nighttime, many devotees remain awake at night, meditating or engaging in devotional activities.

Puja Vidhi for Kalashtami

The rituals for Kalashtami revolve around worshipping Lord Bhairav with devotion and purity:

  • Abhishekam: Begin by performing an abhishekam (sacred bath) of Lord Bhairav’s idol with water, milk, honey, and curd.
  • Offerings: Devotees offer flowers, black sesame seeds, mustard oil, and incense sticks to Lord Bhairav. Black dogs, considered his vahana (vehicle), are often fed as an act of devotion.
  • Lighting lamps: Light mustard oil diyas to dispel darkness and negativity.
  • Mantra chanting: Recite mantras dedicated to Lord Bhairav, focusing on his protective and transformative energy.
  • Evening puja: Special emphasis is placed on performing rituals during the Pradosh Kaal (evening hours) and nighttime.
Observance of Kalashtami

One fascinating aspect of Kalashtami is its fasting rule. The fast is observed on the day when Ashtami Tithi prevails during the night. If Ashtami starts late or overlaps with Saptami (seventh day), the fast is often moved to the previous day to ensure the correct timing. This is rooted in the guidelines from religious texts like the Vratraj and ensures that rituals are aligned with spiritual principles.

Spiritual Benefits of Observing Kalashtami

Fasting and worshipping on Kalashtami are believed to strengthen spiritual resolve, overcome fears, and remove obstacles. Lord Bhairav, as a fierce guardian, grants his devotees courage, discipline, and protection from negative energies. The day is also an opportunity to connect with the energy of time (Kaal), reminding devotees of life’s impermanence and the importance of righteous living.

Kalashtami is a powerful occasion to align oneself with divine energies, seek protection, and deepen spiritual awareness. By fasting, performing rituals, and meditating on Lord Bhairav, devotees connect with his transformative energy and invoke his blessings for a life of strength, courage, and peace.
