The high-stakes auction for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 will be held in Dubai on Tuesday, seeing some of the world’s top cricketers going under the hammer. Ten teams look to add firepower to their existing squads to put themselves in prime position to win the title next summer.
A total of 333 players, including 214 Indian players, will be auctioned and a maximum of 77 slots are available with up to 30 being slotted for overseas players.
The top-tier players are expected to command significantly high prices. Australia’s World Cup heroes Travis Head, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc have all kept their respective base prices in the highest bracket of Rs 2 crore along with out-of-favour India pacer Harshal Patel.
New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra, who made everyone stand up and take note with his batting exploits during the World Cup, is priced at Rs 50 lakh but he is expected go at least 15 if not 20 times more than his base price.
Rs 2 crore is the highest reserve price with 23 players choosing to be slotted in the highest bracket. 13 players are in the auction list with a base price of Rs 1.5 crore
This time the 10 IPL franchises will have a combined Rs 262.95 crore to spend.
This is for the first time that an IPL auction will be held outside India, at the Coca Cola Arena in Dubai.
Mallika Sagar, who led the Women’s Premier League auction last week, is reportedly set to replace Hugh Edmeades as auctioneer for IPL 2024. She has a 25-year career as an art auctioneer and recently forayed into sports auctions as well. She started in 2001 at Christie's, where she became the first woman auctioneer of Indian origin. Sagar also graced the Pro Kabaddi League auction stage in 2021.
