A small, coastal town in Portugal was flooded by red wine as two million litres of the beverage gushed through its streets on Sunday, catching its residents by shock and awe. The streets turned into a red wine river after two container vehicles carrying the wine burst, leading to the mammoth spillage. The incident took place in the town of Sao Lorenco de Bairro.
Quite predictable, the massive flow of red wine astonished the locals and forced officials in the Portugal town to issue an environmental alert and divert the course of its flow to prevent it from contaminating a nearby river, Daily Mail reported, quoting local media. The wine eventually ran into a field after the fire department in the town blocked certain roads.
A video showed the river of red wine sweeping through a steep road and taking a turn as the road curves. A man can be heard speaking in local language.

The wine belonged to a distillery called Levira Distillery, which has apologised since the unprecedented incident.
“We assume full responsibility for the costs associated with cleaning and repairing the damage, having teams available to do so immediately. We are committed to resolving this situation as quickly as possible,” the company said in an apology, which is posted on its Facebook page.
The wine-soil was taken to a special treatment plant, a New York Post reported said, quoting the distillery.
