Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, has publicly acknowledged altering the Mother's Day portrait released by Kensington Palace, sparking a wave of controversy and media withdrawals. The photo, captured by Prince William, came under intense scrutiny as leading agencies withdrew the image, citing concerns of digital manipulation.
The controversy erupted when the first official picture of Kate after her abdominal surgery, taken by Prince William in Windsor last week, faced accusations of digital alterations and was withdrawn by agencies. The Princess of Wales, acknowledging the situation, issued an apology for any confusion caused, citing her occasional experimentation with photo editing.
“Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing. I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother's Day. C,” Kate posted on social media.

The perceived manipulation of the image, particularly the left sleeve of Princess Charlotte's cardigan, fuelled speculation and raised questions about the authenticity of the family moment captured in the photograph.
The controversy comes at a delicate time for the royals, as the public eagerly awaits updates on Kate's health and her return to official duties.
She had not been seen in public for months fuelling conspiracy theories which were eventually debunked in January when the Princess underwent a "planned abdominal surgery." This photograph is Kate's first since her operation.
