Ghazal Alagh, co-founder of beauty brand Mamaearth, warned against the blind usage of Korean skincare products for Indian skin. In a lengthy post on LinkedIn, she detailed how Indian skin is different from Korean skin and has different needs.
In her viral post, she wrote that some of the Korean skincare products can be part of one’s routine but a whole regimen around them should not be formed. “I bet you've heard of or even used Korean skincare products. But did you know their formulations might not be the right fit for you? While the products can be a part of your skincare routine, they should not form your complete skincare routine,” she wrote and then went on to detail how Indian skin has different needs.
The first difference according to her was melanin as Koreans have a lower melanin content than Indians. “Koreans have low melanin content in their skin, and hence they don't go through problems like tanning, pigmentation, uneven skin tone and dark spots, which we Indians have. Our skin is rich in melanin content,” Alagh wrote.
Another point of distinction was climate as the cold and dry weather in Korea allows people to follow an 8-12 step skincare routine. “For us, it might not work. In our hot and humid climate, as we sweat, a 12-step skincare routine will lead to clogging of pores which can lead to acne,” the 35-year-old wrote.
She also urged people to use formulas which just don't give hydration but address other skin concerns as well. Calling it "K-beauty trends", something that Korean beauty products are popularly known as, Alagh shared three crucial steps that Indians should follow for their skincare routine.
"Know your skin type and concerns, choose products that work on your skincare concerns, embrace your Desi skin, and opt for products that are crafted for your Indian skin and needs. Don’t just blindly follow trends! Tailor your skincare routine to your unique needs and our Desi climate," she wrote while concluding her post.
Ghazal Alagh's post garnered a lot of attention on LinkedIn and was deemed "informative" and "helpful" by several users.
