The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is set to survey and demolish unauthorised buildings across the city, starting Monday. This action follows the recent collapse of a six-storey building that tragically claimed eight lives in Bengaluru.

One of the first targets is a five-storey building located in Nanjappa Garden, Babusapalya, Hennur, constructed without the necessary permissions on a 250 sq ft (10x25 ft) plot. The owner has consented to the demolition, allowing BBMP to proceed with the removal of the unsafe structure.

The surrounding residents of the area have been evacuated and a BBMP order states the electricity connection will also be disconnected. The building in Horamavu had tilted prompting a notice to owner who agreed to the demolition.

Authorities say the building will be razed overnight and the owner will clear off the debris according to norms. The building has been barricaded and security officials have been posted.

Twitter went into a frenzy as a picture of the building went viral.

“This is unacceptable. Human greed. Engineer and owner should be punished under law,” one user wrote.

One joked: “Truly a wonder of the architecture world” while another said “Burj East-Dubai” likely in a jibe at Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar who had compared Bengaluru to Dubai after the city flooded.

Another user sarcastically remarked: “What stopped them from building another two floors?”

Another wrote: “Burj Khalifa ultra pro max. This building should be preserved instead of demolition.”

Another dilapidated building in the Islampur slum area also been demolished.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was furious at BBMP over the building collapse following heavy rain that killed eight migrant workers and issued an order to stop to all unauthorised constructions.
