ODI World Cup woes: Inzamam-ul-Haq quits as Pakistan's chief selector over conflict of interest

Inzamam-ul-Haq had been re-appointed as the chief selector of the Pakistan cricket team in August 2023

Former Pakistan cricket captain Inzamam-ul-Haq resigned as the chief selector on October 30, amidst the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023. Haq's resignation followed Pakistan's poor performance in the tournament, with the team losing four matches and occupying the sixth position in the points table, putting them at risk of elimination.

Haq sent his resignation letter to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief, Zaka Ashraf. The catalyst for his resignation was a call from the board inquiring about conflict-of-interest allegations.

In an interview with a news channel, Haq stated, "I decided to step down until the committee conducts its investigation. Once all the issues are cleared, I am ready to sit with PCB." He emphasised his commitment to Pakistan cricket, stating, "I feel there is an inquiry on me, and since I am holding such an important post, I should step down so they can carry out a proper investigation."

The Pakistan Cricket Board has established a five-member fact-finding committee to investigate conflict of interest allegations related to the team selection process, as reported in the media. The committee will submit its report and any recommendations to the PCB Management promptly.

Inzamam-ul-Haq had been re-appointed as the chief selector of the Pakistan cricket team in August, ahead of the World Cup tournament. However, the team's disappointing performance in the 2023 World Cup and their elimination from the Super 4 stage in the Asia Cup led to his resignation.

Prior to Haq, Mohammad Hafeez, another former Pakistan captain, had also resigned from the PCB's technical committee after a review meeting assessed the team's poor performance at the 2023 Asia Cup.
