Observed on the new moon of Kartik month, Diwali or Deepawali this year will be celebrated on Sunday, November 12, 2023. The festivities will begin on November 10 with Dhanteras and end on November 14 with Bhai Dooj.

Dhanteras

Dhanteras is the first day of the five-day Diwali festival. It is celebrated on the thirteenth day of the dark half of the Kartika month as per the Hindu calendar. Dhanteras is a day to worship Lord Dhanvantari, the god of medicine, and Lord Kuber, the god of wealth. People buy gold, silver, and utensils on Dhanteras, believing that it will bring good luck and prosperity.

Choti Diwali

Choti Diwali is the second day of the Diwali festival. It is also known as Naraka Chaturdashi. Choti Diwali is a day to celebrate the victory of good over evil. People light bonfires and burst crackers on Choti Diwali to symbolize the destruction of evil.

Diwali

Govardhan Puja

Govardhan Puja is the fourth day of the Diwali festival. It is also known as Annakut Puja. Govardhan Puja is a day to worship Lord Krishna and Mount Govardhan. On Govardhan Puja, people make a mountain of food and offer it to Lord Krishna.

Govardhan Puja 2023 Date: Tuesday, November 13, 2023.

Bhai Dooj

Bhai Dooj is the fifth and final day of the Diwali festival. It is a day to celebrate the bond between brothers and sisters. On Bhai Dooj, sisters apply tilak on their brothers' foreheads and pray for their well-being. Brothers also give gifts to their sisters on Bhai Dooj.
