A court in Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor has sentenced a man named Sachin Kumar to life imprisonment for putting chilli powder in the eyes of his wife and burning her alive three years ago, in April 2022.
According to a Times of India report, the horrifying incident happened in the Dhampur area of the district.
According to the complaint filed by the victim's brother, Sonu Joshi from Jaspur, Uttarakhand, his sister, who was 35 at the time of her death, had married Sachin Kumar in 2012. Soon after the marriage, Sachin, along with his parents, Adesh Singh and Kavita, and other relatives, started torturing her.
Sonu stated that Sachin was addicted to intoxicants and would often beat his wife whenever she objected to his behaviour. His in-laws also supported Sachin in harassing her. On the morning of April 3, 2022, Sachin deliberately put chilli powder in his wife's eyes.
After she washed her eyes, Sachin’s parents and other relatives allegedly held her down while Sachin poured diesel on her and set her on fire.
She was rushed to the hospital with severe burn injuries but passed away on July 22, 2022, after battling for her life for over three months.
Public Prosecutor Pankaj Chauhan said that an FIR was registered under charges of murder and dowry harassment, while a chargesheet was filed against Sachin, his father Adesh, and cousin Abhishek.
Adesh and Abhishek were later acquitted due to a lack of evidence.
Additional Sessions Judge Anupam Singh on Wednesday sentenced Sachin to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on him.
